Larissa had been studying very hard lately, she wanted to keep her mind off of her brother. But while sitting in the Gryffindor common room she happened to look at her homework planner and read the date. She stared bleary eyes at the page for a while as it sunk in. It was Liam's birthday. Or, it would have been had he still been alive. Larissa slammed her planner closed and buried it under a pile of books and papers. She tried to keep her tears back, wanting to stay brave in appearance in front of her fellow Gryffindors. She knew that at any moment the tears would burst out and so she ran out of Gryffindor tower, leaving her study materials scattered on the work table.
Larissa didn't know where to go, everywhere she turned there were her peers. They all had looks of concern on their faces as she ran past them, still attempting to hold back her tears. She ran down several flights of stairs, finally ending up in the entrance hall. To her left was a group of Slytherins and to her right was a group of Gryffindors. Not wanting to meet up with either of those groups in her condition she went straight out the large double doors that led to the castle grounds.
No longer could she hold back her tears. She let them fall from her dark eyes and stream down her cheeks. It was too much. She thought she would be able to deal better with the situation once she was back at school. She thought the classes would keep her too busy to feel the pain. But she was wrong. She collapsed on the grass about fifteen feet from the blue-green water of the lake. Larissa let the hurt wash over her and sobbed into her hands.

Ryan had been standing and talking with a group of fellow Gryffindors, when he say Larissa run past them looking like she was on the verge of tears. He watched as she ran for the double doors, and he started to get a little worried. What would make her cry like this, what happened?"
"Hey guys I'll be right back" He told the group of Gryffindors and he went after Larissa. By the time Ryan had caught up with Larissa he had found her on the ground. Really not sure what to do he thought he would try talking to he, but talking was one of Ryan's greatest traits. "Are you OK?"

Larissa had tried so hard to keep her composure in front of her peers inside the castle, only to fail now. Ryan had followed her outside to where she was obviously crying. She would have felt ashamed of herself, had the pain in her heart not been so strong. But because she had tried to bottle it up for so long, she was unable to keep it inside any longer.
"No!" She cried. "No, I am not okay. He's gone. And he should be here. He should be playing right over there." She pointed to the lake and spoke between sobs. She didn't bother to wipe her tears away. She simply let them fall down her face and onto her blouse. As she spoke she got angry. Why wasn't he here? It was that stupid beast's fault that her brother was gone. She looked up at Ryan. "It's not fair! He was so young, and he didn't deserve to die."
Larissa was so hurt she didn't even stop to realize that Ryan, nor anyone else at school, might not know what she was talking about. It had happened at the end of the year and her family was not one for gossip. But these things did have a way of spreading around and no one would be surprised if the entire school had known for months now. Things that were secrets often times were well known facts here at Hogwarts.

"Who?" Ryan asked in a soft low tone. Ryan could tell who ever it was, was someone close to her, but he still didn't know who. It seemed to be a really big deal by the way she was acting so he got the sense that it was a family member.
Ryan tried to think of something comforting to say to her to help her calm down, but he couldn't think of anything, but then again he was never a good talker in situations like theses.

Larissa wiped the tears away from her face and tried to compose a little. She was breathing awkwardly due to the running and the crying, and focused her energies on getting her breathing back to normal. Soon she was feeling a little better, but not much. It still hurt inside, but at least she wouldn't be looking like a loon on the outside.
"Liam, my brother." She tried to keep her voice steady as she spoke. "It's his birthday." She stopped then said "well it would be his birthday if he were-" she forced herself to say it, "-alive." She didn't care if it was a stupid reason to be upset. It was reason enough for her. She had loved Liam, and still did. She wondered if it would always hurt this bad or if the pain would subside eventually.

"Oh." Ryan again spoke in a low soft tone, but this time his voice was a lot quieter. He was starting to understand where Larissa was coming from, and he could see why she was so upset. A thought crossed his mind she said if it wasn't for that beast, he wondered what she meant, did a kind of animal kill him or was she just calling what ever it was a beast.

She continued to fight back the tears. The gentle wind that brushed against her face helped her to keep her composure. She closed her eyes for a second and saw Liam running through the castle halls. She quickly opened her eyes and looked at Ryan. He was being so nice about her little situation and she gave him a smile as thanks.
"It happened the end of last term." She was talking mostly to herself, but at a volume that Ryan could hear. She often told herself this story, something she assumed the living generally did after someone passed. "That is why I didn't return on the Hogwarts Express to my family last year." She had left before the end of term banquet. "My grandparents met me in front of St. Mungos and told me about his accident." She wasn't focusing her eyes on anything in particular, she just looked out onto the sky.
"You know," she said coming out of her trance-like state and looking straight at Ryan. "I used to want to work with animals. But I can't bring myself to even take Care of Magical Creatures this year. I mean, I know it's safe. And Liam's accident was, well, and accident. But sometimes I wish they had put that hippogryff to down. Liam was an excellent rider. I know it wasn't his fault."
